After almost forty years since the last edition of the Slovak botanical nomenclature, a new, updated, and substantially expanded edition is being published. It is the result of long-term collaboration among distinguished experts from the following institutions:
- Institute of Botany, CPBS SAS, Bratislava
- Ľudovít Štúr Institute of Linguistics, SAS, Bratislava
- Comenius University, Bratislava
- Slovak University of Agriculture, Nitra
- Technical University, Zvolen
- Matej Bel University, Banská Bystrica
- Pavol Jozef Šafárik University, Košice
The publication provides Slovak names for 5,700 genera, 21 sections (within the genera Rubus and Taraxacum), 16,314 species, 1,661 lower taxa, and 491 mostly cultivated intergeneric to intraspecific hybrids. These taxa belong to 509 families, comprising a total of 24,187 taxa of vascular plants (the previous edition from 1986 included Slovak names for 10,374 taxa of vascular plants).
In line with current horticultural practice, the publication also includes Slovak names of cultivar groups, particularly of economically important plants, while taking into account their traditional and commonly used national names. A separate chapter is devoted to Slovak names of 252 genera of extinct plants.
In addition to critically revised scientific names (based on current taxonomic, particularly molecular-phylogenetic, studies) and their Slovak equivalents, the publication also provides information on the nativeness of taxa and the naturalisation of alien plants in Slovakia.
The publication is intended for professional botanists as well as a wide range of users, including foresters, farmers and water managers, nature conservationists, staff of museums, botanical gardens, arboreta and horticultural establishments, landscape architects, gardeners and alpine plant enthusiasts, growers of exotic plants, aquarists, collectors and cultivators of medicinal plants, pupils, students and their teachers, promoters of natural beauty, authors and translators of textbooks and popular-science works, and all others interested in the living world.
