The largest science popularisation event in Slovakia – Science Night 2025 – offered a day filled with discovery, curiosity, and inspiring encounters.
Among dozens of stands, the CBRB SAV team drew attention with their project, Who does not belong here and who lives here: Invasive species and DNA analysis of biodiversity. Visitors learned how modern DNA techniques reveal the diversity of life and track the spread of non-native plants and animals that threaten our ecosystems.
Scientists explained how species identification works using DNA barcodes, why early detection of invasive species is crucial, and the consequences of their uncontrolled spread.
The stand attracted hundreds of people, from children to seniors. Together, they explored the world of biodiversity, from aquatic ecosystems to terrestrial biotopes, and discovered how life is studied today using state-of-the-art technologies.
There were also interactive demonstrations and activities that revealed the secrets of nature to all curious minds. The entire day was held under the motto: Nature is full of surprises – join us in discovering it!
Thanks go to the entire ZooLab team and botanist Lucia Čahojová, who did an excellent job representing CBRB SAV at the event, which attracted more than 130,000 visitors last year. Science Night once again demonstrated that science can appeal to the general public, future scientists, and experts from other disciplines.
