The European Vegetation Survey Conference

From 28 April to 2 May 2025, scientists from all over Europe met for the annual conference of the European Vegetation Survey (EVS), which this time took place in Perugia in the heart of Italy. Around 150 experts were in attendance.

The event brought together researchers from different parts of Europe to discuss the latest findings in the fields of vegetation ecology, ecological restoration and biodiversity conservation.

Lucia Čahojová, as the only representative of the Centre for Plant Biology and Biodiversity of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, Institute of Botany, presented the results of the bilateral Slovakian-Slovenian MOBILITY project ZRC SAZU-SAS. The research focuses on the geomorphology and biodiversity of sinkholes (dolines in the British literature, sinkholes in the American), which can act as small climate refugia (microrefugia).

In her lecture, Lucia presented the connection between botanical, zoological (with a focus on terrestrial gastropods) and geomorphological research as well as the monitoring of macro- and microclimatic conditions.

Lucia’s presentation was well received and recognised by the jury – she was awarded second place out of around twenty presenters in the competition for the best presentation by a young scientist.

The conference not only offered a scientific programme – it was also an opportunity for interesting encounters, inspiring discussions and the exchange of experiences in the community of botanists and vegetation ecologists. The programme included two excursions: one to the Colfiorito wetlands, the Monti Sibillini plateau (Castelluccio di Norcia) and the town of Norcia, and the other to the impressive Marmore waterfalls and Lake Piediluco.

Lucia Čahojová would like to thank the IAVS organisation and the conference organising committee for their financial support and all the members of the “Doline” team and friends for their cooperation and support.
