Scientific collections
Plant Science and Biodiversity Centre SAS houses scientfically important collections. This is a source of knowledge on biodiversity richness of mostly Western Carpathian and Pannonian regions. The collections are bases for research in taxonomy and chorology of different components of biodiversity. In many cases the vouchers represent the only testimony of currently extinct species or disappeared localities. The collections include also valuable type material. The collection is listed in international database Index herbariorum (http://sweetgum.nybg.org/science/ih/), abbreviation „SAV“. The collection is used also through loans and visits to home and international colleagues.
Collection include
- vascular plants
- seeds and fruits of vascular plants
- fungi
- lichens
- bryophytes
- cultures of cyanobacteria and algae

CYANOBACTERIA AND ALGAE
Phycological collection is the only collection of phototrophic microorganisms in Slovakia. It icludes more then 900 cultures of cyanobacteria and different groups of algae kept on liquid and solid media. Important are historical strains isolated by prof. F. Hindák from different geographical areas of the world. He specialized on green algae, an example of such a strain is Hindák 1969/251- Didymocystis inconspicua Korshikov (current valid name Pseudodidymocystis (Korshikov) Hindák). The collection is being enriched by new isolates of cyanobacteria and algae, linked to the on-going projects, including algae and lichens (lichen photobionts). The collection includes type cultures, part of the strains isolated in PSBC SAS was sent to European algological collections. More »
